iPad and Chromium OS dance on video

Oh Hexxeh, you sly tease. Yesterday, we saw the Chromium OS impresario post up an image of Google's browser-centric environment running around inside Apple's iPad and today he's followed it up with a video. Unfortunately, it's not the best performance demo in the world and is all too brief, but it does show touch sensitivity (kinda) functioning and -- the strongest evidence that we're no longer using iOS -- a mouse cursor! Join us after the break as we follow the fascinating journey of an attempted Spotify Extension installation in Chrome.

Lenovo Introduces 11" ThinkPad Edge Ultraportable

Some analysts have suggested that the popularity of tablets will eat away at the ultraportable sector. That may end up being true in the long-term, but as of today, there is yet another ultraportable to choose from. The Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 11 is a new 11" laptop, and it's the smallest and lightest member of the Edge family. It still shares the same general ThinkPad look, but in a much smaller frame. The machine weighs less than 3lbs., has an HDMI port, includes a webcam and ships in three color choices: Midnight

Google Instant vs. Bing

Google's now offering real-time predictive search on its homepage, at least for anyone signed into a Google account (expect the service to go wide in the next short while). Some online pundits have suggested that Google's just pulled off the Internet version of New Coke--a supposedly better product that nobody really asked for--but I'm sort of liking the instant results, which seem to make the whole search process a little faster.

But this is Microsoft Watch, so I'm also thinking about how this might affect Bing. For the moment, Microsoft seems to be sticking with ye olde-fashioned model, suggesting possible search terms as you type but not offering real-time links. At least, not yet: If past trends are any indication, Microsoft will attempt to one-up Google with a predictive search feature of its very own, possibly within the next few weeks.

At the same time, though, Bing seems to be diverging from Google in certain key ways. Back in March, Bing Director Stefan Weitz pointed out to eWEEK that Google maintained an epic lead in traditional keyword-based search, compelling Microsoft to focus more on verticals such as commercial-based queries and travel.

"People are creatures of habit and they're fairly happy with Google's keyword search today and they think it works well," Weitz said at the time, "and there's no reason for them to look around."

At the same time, Weitz added, "It's not a zero-sum game ... We think we can expand that which people do with these engines. We can grow the overall pie, the overall number of searches that are happening across the Web." That means focusing on areas such as Bing Shopping, or instantly connecting users to theater show times--and in turn leads to features such as Local Events, which studs a map with pins showing the day's happenings around a particular location.

By the time June rolled around, Microsoft had expanded its verticals, offering an Entertainment tab centered on music, movies and games. That addition gave Bing the feeling of a Yahoo-like Web portal; not only could you search for terms from the main search page, but with two or three clicks you could also watch movie trailers or stream a song via the company's Zune service.

In other words, Microsoft may follow Google's latest foray into real time, but the two companies' search engines seem to be diverging somewhat in their respective missions and features.

Operation Cyber Storm III underway, makes digital certificates cool again

Fans of cyberwarfare (which we are, if only because we like to imagine that it looks like Battlezone) take note: following hot on the heels previous Cyber Storm I and II and Cyber ShockWave wargames, the Department of Homeland Security is sponsoring a little something called Cyber Storm III. Starting yesterday, the three-day exercise simulates more than 1,500 different types of attack, with a special emphasis on identities, trust relationships, and digital certificates. As Brett Lambo, director of Homeland Security's Cyber Exercise Program, told AFP, "we're kind of using the Internet to attack itself. At a certain point the operation of the Internet is reliant on trust -- knowing where you're going is where you're supposed to be." The exercise will test the National Cyber Incident Response Plan as well as the new National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center. But you can breathe easily: the operation is focusing on defense, not offense (for now).Operation Cyber Storm III underway, makes digital certificates cool again originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 28 Sep 2010 17:47:00 EDT. Pixel Qi turns into ideal 10-inch companion display with wired and Wireless USB, 1.5W power needs

Pixel Qi has today announced it's taking the next step in its quest for global domination of sunlight-readable displays. Partnering up with German outfit Display Solution AG, the company is about to start selling its 10-inch, 1024 x 600 panels as standalone units, which you'll be able to hook up to your computer or smartphone via USB, either the wired or Wireless version. Power consumption maxes out a measly 1.5W with the LED backlight turned on, meaning that one USB tether will be sufficient to feed it both power and data. We don't know exactly how long we've waited for a secondary screen with this sort of flexibility, but it's sure been a while. Nielsen: growth of digital music sales flat in 2010

It's a bit early for the big music companies to start panicking, but it looks like the heyday of double-digit growth in digital music sales may now be behind us. That's according to market research firm Nielsen, at least, which found that sales in the US fell flat in 2010 after a 13 percent increase from 2008 to 2009, and a whopping 28 percent jump from 2007 to 2008. Nielsen is quick to point out, however, that it thinks this is a "plateau," and that it "doesn't mean that this digital consumption is going to drop significantly." It also still seems to be a different story outside of the US, with Nielsen reporting that digital music sales were up 7 percent in Britain, 13 percent in Germany and 19 percent in France.

TiVo banking on the software business, delays DirecTV HD unit to 2011

It's been five years since TiVo first promised DirecTV customers an HD DVR and two years since the company reaffirmed that claim, so if you've been waiting patiently you probably know what we're going to say -- it's been delayed yet again. TiVo marketing VP Joe Miller told PC Magazine that the fabled DirecTiVo will actually appear "early next year," which should give you plenty of time to work out your rage. Before you storm off to your standard-definition video collection, however, there's another thing you might like to know: the executive also not-so-subtly suggested that TiVo's hardware business won't be a focus for long. In a series of increasingly telling quotes, Miller called software the company's "core competence," said it was "in our blood" and "the thing we do well," and even added that "the software is what we're all about." To be completely frank, TiVo has held the gold standard for DVR software for over a decade, but that's mostly because no one successfully stepped up to the plate -- not even TiVo itself, whose Premiere interface shipped the definition of half-baked. So when the company suggests that software is one of its strengths, please pardon a few chuckles from our corner of the room. Cisco, Skype Merger Could Improve Enterprise and Consumer VOIP, Video

News Analysis: After its Aug. 6 IPO filing, Skype has a couple of months to decide whether to go ahead with a public offering or to opt for an eBay part deux by falling into the arms of another large acquirer. Right now, the most likely buyer is Cisco Systems. It's not clear whether Cisco will end up opting to pony up billions of dollars to purchase Skype, but few technology companies would be better suited to take Skype to the next level. Skype could be a natural extension to many existing products within the Cisco portfolio and could be a vital cog to help deliver VOIP (voice over IP), instant messaging chats and multiparty video calling to even more places and more devices. eWEEK Labs combed through the networking giant's array of products and services aimed toward the home, the office and the data center to identify possible points of synergy where Cisco could better deliver these services to consumers and enterprise employees alike. EU plans to end Apple antitrust investigation in light of relaxed iPhone rules

It seems like Apple's legal team is constantly embroiled in a pitched battle of some sort, but this weekend they might get to relax -- citing recent iPhone policy changes, the European Commission's decided to stop breathing down their necks. Though the EU originally joined the US Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission in investigating why Cupertino chose to block third-party dev tools and ads earlier this year, the fact that Apple recently relaxed both restrictions (and created a repair program for iPhones purchased abroad) satisfied European regulators. "The Commission intends to close the investigations into these matters," it wrote earlier today. There's no guarantee that the US powers-that-be will exercise similar leniency, of course, but we wouldn't be surprised -- even inside Apple, the DoJ's got other fish to fry.EU plans to end Apple antitrust investigation in light of relaxed iPhone rules originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 25 Sep 2010 13:34:00 EDT. HP Slate prototype gets yet another guided tour, this time with HDMI-equipped dock (video)

Remember that HP Slate prototype video we happened upon just yesterday? The owner, who goes by the name x313xkillax on YouTube, is back with over eight more minutes of footage, including the packaging. According to the back of the box of this self-proclaimed business model, here's the official specs we're looking at: a 1.86GHz Intel Atom Z540 with GMA500 and Broadcom Crystal HD Enhanced Video accelerator, 8.9-inch WSVGA screen, 2GB DDR2 RAM, about 60GB storage capacity, Windows 7 Home Premium, 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth, SD card reader, and a 2-Cell 30WHr Lithium-ion Polymer battery. There are two cameras here, one in front and one in rear.

As shown via MS Paint, the screen can detect at least four fingers at a time. The browser is a bit laggy but does do pinch-to-zoom -- again, he calls it a prototype, so it may be better in the final production model. Also in the packaging? Panasonic's hair-washing robot: rinse, kill, repeat

If Panasonic can build an exercise horse then surely a robot that washes your hair should come as no surprise. Imagine being lifted from your robotic bed by a plush care-assist robot and placed into a chair for an automatic shampoo and scalp massage. That is the future of care for the elderly and sick in Japan, or the rich and lazy everywhere else. Panasonic's hair-washing robot scans each human head three-dimensionally to apply just the right amount of pressure during the shampoo, massage, and rinse phases. It recognizes repeat customers and then applies that person's preferred massage course using its human-like sixteen "fingers." Each arm contains a trio of motors to power swing, press, and massage motions... or to snap your spinal column should you decide to sass.Continue reading Panasonic's hair-washing robot: rinse, kill, repeatPanasonic's hair-washing robot: rinse, kill, repeat originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 07:53:00 EDT. Verbatim's Clip-it is a USB drive with paperclip ambitions

It sure is hard to differentiate yourself in the highly competitive world of ever-shrinking USB storage. To avoid this trend of disregard, Verbatim has sent its latest offering off to paper management school and the results are now apparent for us to see. The new Clip-it comes with an added incision in the middle of its lilliputian body that allows it to act as a paperclip or maybe even a handsome accessory to your geek chique outfit. Verbatim makes sure to tell us (about eleventy times) that the Clip-it has scooped up a red dot Design Award for its ingenuity, and prices the thing at eminently affordable €8.99 (2GB) and €11.49 (4GB) levels. Those correspond to $12 and $15.34, respectively, meaning you could have the whole set of seven colors for less than what you'd have to spend on just one iWatch.Continue reading Verbatim's Clip-it is a USB drive with paperclip ambitionsVerbatim's Clip-it is a USB drive with paperclip ambitions originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 01:52:00 EDT. Dell's Looking Glass tablet gets another chance to shine (video)

The elusive Looking Glass might have dodged the zoom lenses yesterday, but luckily, the good folks at Oracle managed to tape Michael Dell's lightning demo (pun totally intended) with a close-up shot. From what we can see, the volume rocker is located at the top side of the tablet, right next to what could potentially be a switch for screen rotation lock or silent mode; the headphone jack appears to be on the left-hand side of the device, which makes sense -- we can't imagine this beastly device fitting into a pocket of any sorts, otherwise. Sadly, we can't confirm whether this 7-inch Android tablet uses the same PDMI port as featured on the Streak, nor can we see what's on the back -- we caught a glimpse of something shiny, but the leaked spec sheet we came across some time ago doesn't mention a back camera. Anyhow, you can catch this big daddy in action right after the break -- about 1:27 into the clip.Gallery: Dell's Looking Glass tablet gets another chance to shine (video)

PSA: Sony says counterfeit PS3 controllers could explode

We're not sure why anyone would buy a knock-off DualShock 3 or SIXAXIS gamepad, considering the trouble Sony's taken to make sure they don't work, but the PlayStation 3 manufacturer has another reason you might want to steer clear of counterfeit pads -- they could be tiny Li-ion bombs poised to explode. Talk about force feedback! Yes, the company that brought us exploding laptop batteries says that third-party products "which are practically identical in appearance to genuine PlayStation(R)3 wireless controllers" may burst into flame, and as you might expect, Sony suggests that you run out to your nearest retailer and purchase the real deal instead. Google Gets Chrome Web Store Ready To Roll With Guidelines, Payments, And Previews

While they're still only officially saying that the it will launch "later this year", it appears that Google is taking the steps to get ready for a Chrome Web Store launch very soon. Specifically, a post today highlights that developers can now hook their apps up to Google Checkout merchant accounts (to be able to sell their apps -- U.S.-only for the time being), and that there is now a way to preview how your app will look in the store when it goes live.

None of this should be too surprising consider that a presentation in August stated the Chrome Web Store would launch in October. But all the pieces are finally falling into place. While the placeholder space for apps in Chromium (the open source browser that Chrome is based on) keep popping in and out ofexistence, the Web Store itself seems to be fullyfunctional(it's a part of the Extension online area).

HP Windows 7 Slate Video Suggests Trainwreck in Making

Hewlett-Packard's tablet aspirations might be in very, very big trouble--and along with it, Microsoft's hopes for making a dent in the tablet market.
Take a look at the following YouTube video, which comes courtesy of the curiously named "x313xkillax."

If that's really a prototype of the upcoming HP Slate running Windows 7, and if it's anything close to the finished product, then they might as well stamp "R.M.S. Titanic" on the side. Why include a "CTRL-ALT-DEL" button on the device's chassis unless you expect the software to crash on a regular basis? What's with having a mechanical button to activate a virtual onscreen keyboard? And yes, the device seems to Web-surf pretty quickly, but an unmodified version of Windows 7 on a small touch screen translates into icons roughly the size of theoretical particles: You better have a stylus or small fingers.
We're not even going to talk about how it takes 25 seconds to boot.
During July's Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference, HP's Todd Bradley was quoted as saying, "Our focus is working with our still largest software partner, Microsoft, to create a tablet for the enterprise business." This was relatively soon after HP acquired Palm, whose WebOS is widely expected to appear on the company's consumer-oriented tablets.
If this video actually shows a near-final HP Slate in action, then I can only assume that HP is pouring resources into the WebOS version of the tablet, and neglecting the development of the Windows 7 counterpart--leaving it to die, in other words, while they leverage their Palm acquisition to its fullest extent. Either that, or else HP assumes that businesses will simply buy anything, provided there's enough sales muscle behind it.
Although Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has said repeatedly that his company intends to triumph in the tablet arena, it's been an open question whether Windows will be modified to run on the form factor. Some might argue that Windows 7 came with touch-screen capabilities baked into the code, and that all Microsoft needs to do is find a manufacturing partner willing to design a truly kick-ass piece of hardware.
But Google Android and Apple's iOS4 have both demonstrated the better utility of a smartphone-like OS on a tablet; if I were Microsoft, I'd give serious thought to importing Windows Phone 7's user interface onto the form factor, and discarding entirely this albatross of an idea that Windows 7 can run perfectly on anything with a processor and a screen. It can't.
And if this supposed HP prototype is the shape of things to come, everybody's going to learn that the hard way.

Visa rolling out payWave mobile phone payments in NY subway and taxis

DeviceFidelity's mobile twist on Visa's payWave system is a nice little solution to the fact that nobody's bothered to build contactless payment chips into US mobile phones just yet -- DeviceFidelity just stuffs the Visa smart chip circuitry into a microSD card and lets you on your way. Of course, this supplants the much needed additional storage on an Android handset, and requires a chunky add-on case for the iPhone, but at least it's a start. Visa will now start allowing those payWave-enabled devices to make contactless payments at subway turnstiles and taxi backseats in New York City as part of a new trial for the tech. Of course you've been able to do this with all sorts of chipped credit cards already, but there's something very future-ey about swiping your phone to make a payment -- now how about ditching the clunky add-ons and building some of this circuitry in by default?Continue reading Visa rolling out payWave mobile phone payments in NY subway and taxisVisa rolling out payWave mobile phone payments in NY subway and taxis originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 00:12:00 EDT. Microsoft's Arc Touch Mouse Lurking Around Web

With all the recent excitement over touch screens, it's sometimes easy to overlook that the mouse remains essentially unchanged from Ye Olden Days of the Reagan era. Sure, they've gotten more ergonomically inclined, with new inputs such as scroll wheels and third buttons; but a time-traveler from the 1980s would have no trouble recognizing and using one.The mouse's current evolution, it seems, centers on making it more touch-centric than ever. Look at Apple's Magic Mouse, with a multitouch surface that allows for scrolls, swipes and zooms. Then there's Microsoft's Arc Touch Mouse, images of which recently appeared on a German shopping Website. Microsoft's not making anything official, but if the rumors prove true, the mouse includes some features that would give Sonny Crockett a severe case of future shock: touch-scrolling, a 2.4GHz nano transceiver and the ability to flatten its regular arched shape for easier transport. The mouse's page on that German Website has already been taken down, but Engadget managed to snatch some screenshots ahead of the deletion. Slashgear's also posted a supposed marketing image, which has the Arc Touch Mouse looking like a black plastic inchworm.Rumors peg the mouse's price at $69.95, and its release date sometime during the fall (soon, in any case). Personally, aside from the coolness factor, I don't see the point of a mouse that can alternatively curve or flatten--I know some people would rather use a mouse with their laptops, and carry one along on trips; but I didn't figure enough of them out there to justify that sort of engineering decision. In any case, it's a differentiator.Given how that silver strip bifurcates the top of the mouse into two black "tabs," I'm guessing this is a two-button mouse in the tradition of previous Microsoft offerings. Does a finger-swipe on that strip activate the touch scrolling? I'm thinking maybe; it's certainly positioned in the same place as a traditional scroll wheel. I'm curious about whether this follows in the steps of the Magic Mouse, with a multitouch surface, or if we're dealing with old-fashioned mechanical buttons.Either way, Microsoft will likely make an announcement soon. For your viewing pleasure, here's one of the snatched box shots that's been drifting around the Interwebs:

Sony Ericsson's CEO promises 'big surprises in the next few months' (video)

The grand opening of Sony Ericsson's new Americas HQ in Atlanta isn't the sort of thing we spend sleepless nights thinking about, but a PSP Phone is. It's mighty encouraging, therefore, to hear the company's CEO Bert Nordberg tease "big surprises" coming from his team over the next few months. That revelation was accompanied by plentiful references to SE as an entertainment phone maker, a sly grin, and the usual disclaimer that "we never announce them in advance" -- though considering the gap between the Xperia X10 announcement and arrival to market, maybe Bert should reconsider that part. Either way, unless SE's big surprise is the delivery of a smartphone with an up-to-date OS and cutting-edge components on time (which would, admittedly, be a surprise), we're happy to take this as a sign that the Android 3.0-powered gaming platform-cum-smartphone is brewing nicely behind the scenes.Continue reading Sony Ericsson's CEO promises 'big surprises in the next few months' (video)Sony Ericsson's CEO promises 'big surprises in the next few months' (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 22 Sep 2010 15:49:00 EDT. An iPhone App For Asking Questions And Getting Nearby Answers

The search engine Ask is about to submit an iPhone app to Apple designed for asking questions on the go. About a year ago, Ask returned to its roots as a place to ask and answer questions. Roughly 35 to 40 percent of all search queries typed into Ask are in the form of a question, versus maybe 6 to 9 percent for other search engines, according to Ask president Doug Leeds. Ask's main search page centers around questions, and last July it launched a social Q&A feature that is still in private beta.

When the iPhone app launches in the next couple of weeks, anyone who downloads it will automatically be enrolled in Ask's social Q&A beta. The app lets you ask questions either by typing them in or speaking them. It translates the voice to text and then tries to offer up the most likely answer right away, based on its index of more than 500 million question and answer pairs from sources across the Web, including other Q&A sites, FAQ pages, and more. Right below that best guess is an option to "Ask the Community." Your question will then be routed to people in the beta who self-selected as being knowledgeable in related categories.

Memorex intros Mirror for Photos external HDD, dares you to skip a backup

Taking a note from Clickfree, are we Memorex? The company that continually attempts to blow everyone away is back with its latest gust, Mirror for Photos. It's an odd name for an external hard drive, particularly when you realize that it functions nothing like bona fide photo backup drives that are designed to tether to your DSLR. At any rate, this here drive ships with software (PC and Mac compatible, in case you're curious) that instructs the HDD to backup to a host machine as soon as it's plugged in. Sounds great in theory, but we've always found it superbly annoying to try and halt those automated processes when you're just trying to drag and drop a critical meeting file while darting out the door. The unit itself measures in at 3- x 5- x 0.5-inches and gets all the power it needs from a USB connection; it's on sale today at Toys R Us (yeah, seriously) for $79.99 (320GB) / $99.99 (500GB) / $119.99 (640GB).Continue reading Memorex intros Mirror for Photos external HDD, dares you to skip a backupMemorex intros Mirror for Photos external HDD, dares you to skip a backup originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 18 Sep 2010 07:32:00 EDT. Skyhook: Google forced Motorola to drop our location service, delay the Droid X

We figured Skyhook's business interference and patent infringement lawsuits against Google would turn up some dirt, and we didn't have long to wait: the location-services company's complaint flatly alleges that Google's Andy Rubin ordered Motorola's Sanjay Jha to "stop ship" on the Droid X because it used Skyhook's XPS positioning system instead of Google Location Services, a tiff that ultimately delayed the phone's release while Moto reworked the software and dropped Skyhook entirely. Following that, Skyhook claims that Google then went after an unidentified "Company X" (likely Samsung) and forced it to drop XPS as well -- which would certainly explain why Samsung's Galaxy S phones have WiFi positioning turned off by default, unlike every other Android phone. Ouch.

If you're thinking that makes no sense because Android is "open," well, you might have another think coming -- Skyhook claims that Google's decisions to allow access to Android Market and its branded apps are an entirely subjective ruse based on something called the Compliance Definition Document, which can be "arbitrarily" interpreted any way Google wants with no recourse. Skyhook says that Google has now told Android OEMs that they're required to use Google Location Services, preventing Skyhook from fulfilling its contracts and costing the company millions in expected royalties.

Now, this is Skyhook's side of the story and we're sure Google will make a persuasive argument of its own, but let's just back up for a moment here and point out the obvious: Google's never, ever come out and clearly said what's required for devices to gain access to Android Market and the branded apps like Gmail -- even though we've been directly asking about those requirements since Android first launched. Remember when Andy Rubin told us that there would be full-fledged "Google Experience" phones with no carrier or handset manufacturer limitations? Or when we were told that phones with skins like HTC Sense or additional features like Exchange integration wouldn't have Google branding? And then all of that turned out to be a lie? Yes, Android might be "open" in the sense that the source code is available, but there's no doubt Google's wielded incredible power over the platform by restricting access to Market and its own apps -- power that hasn't been used to prevent carrier-mandated bloatware or poorly-done manufacturer skinning, but has instead apparently been used to block legitimate competitors like Skyhook from doing business. We're dying to hear Google's side of this story and fill in some of the gaps -- and you can bet we're digging as hard as we can for more info. Stay tuned, kids.Skyhook: Google forced Motorola to drop our location service, delay the Droid X originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 17 Sep 2010 15:37:00 EDT. Samsung's DI07 update for Epic 4G adds Media Hub, but does it fix other issues?

The Samsung Epic 4G has a new software update available that takes the device from version DG27 (spotted in the build number and baseband version) to DI07. Since it launched on Sprint at the end of last month, users have complained about various issues from inaccurate GPS results (despite functional results in our testing with apps like Google Maps and Foursquare, obtaining a precise location from satellites only is still iffy at best and too often requires a reboot), 3G upload speeds that appear to be capped at 150kbps, poor signal reception and more and are likely waiting to see if those have been addressed. So far, the update details (included after the break) indicate that isn't the case. Getting the update is a matter of luck for now with the servers initially in push mode but when it hits users should have access to the just-launched Media Hub app as well as optimizations for battery power in hotspot mode, performance tweaks and several fixes including one for recognizing 32 GB micro SD cards. Our Epic 4G isn't rocking any new patches no matter how many times we hit Update Android; if you get the update, let us know if you notice any other changes.

Update: A few commenters have linked up the zip file for your manual upgrading pleasure. We were able to update using the process and haven't experienced any glitches or instantaneous combustion as a result, though we are feeling even more attractive and intelligent than usual. A demonstration video from AndroidCentral is embedded after the break if you're still curious.Continue reading Samsung's DI07 update for Epic 4G adds Media Hub, but does it fix other issues?Samsung's DI07 update for Epic 4G adds Media Hub, but does it fix other issues? originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 17 Sep 2010 16:57:00 EDT.
