Nokia collects design patent for a tablet, evokes N8 aesthetics (update: there's another one!)

It's no secret that Nokia's been casting an interested eye over the tablet market and now we have a bit of extra evidence to show its intent, courtesy of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The federal bureau has just published a design patent granted to the Finnish company for a tablet device, which was applied for on May 28th, 2010. Sadly, that date tells us what we're looking at is most probably a shelved MeeGo machine that never made it to market rather than an upcoming world conqueror, but still, here it is for all of us to gawk at and admire. Judging by the 3.5mm headphone jack outline -- which, like the rest of the dotted lines on the sketch, isn't covered by the patent -- we're likely looking at a 9- or 10-inch slate, whose design reminds us most acutely of Nokia's N8 phone. See more pics in the gallery below before returning to your mind cave to fantasize about what might have been... or might still be.

HP webOS Decision Not Exactly Doom for Microsoft

Hewlett-Packard apparently plans to ship PCs capable of running the company's recently acquired webOS, according to a March 9 Bloomberg report.That article quotes HP CEO Leo Apotheker as saying the move would create "a massive platform" and help differentiate the company's broad family of products from its rivals. HP's webOS PCs will apparently dual-boot with Windows.If you listen to some of the pundits' reactions, the bell may be readying to toll for Microsoft and Windows.Galen Gruman over at InfoWorld is calling HP's move the proverbial straw that breaks the camel's back. "I fully expect all the dark mutterings I've been hearing off the record about Microsoft's rudderless mobile efforts and lack of interest in a new version of Windows will go public," he wrote March 10, before suggesting those frustrations represent "an eerie parallel" to "what's happening in North Africa and the Middle East today."Yep, because Microsoft totally equates with what's going on in Libya right now.Meanwhile, Betanews' Joe Wilcox also decided it was time to start singing the doom song, albeit in a somewhat more moderated way: "If HP's WebOS strategy plays out - and surely that means someday shipping only its OS rather than paying Windows license fees - Microsoft will lose revenues and its most important strategic partner."Let's take a nice deep breath, boil a cup of soothing tea, and remember that Microsoft's position in the operating-system market is deeply entrenched. The latest Net Applications data pegs Windows' market-share at 89.69 percent. By comparison, and despite its position as America's arguably most white-hot company (aside from Facebook), Apple's hold on that market totals 5.19 percent (its iOS franchise holds 1.81 percent of that same market, if you aggregate PC operating systems in with mobile ones).Even if HP manages to execute on its plan to bring webOS to all its PCs, and even if it persuades developers to design a massive portfolio of useful and fun applications for the platform, and even if consumers and IT pros overcome any natural hesitation in embracing new and relatively unknown, and even if webOS manages to integrate a whole host of legacy applications without requiring users to switch over to Windows, it's unlikely that it'll erode Microsoft's market-share in any appreciable way, especially considering that HP is keeping the Windows option as a dual-boot.Think of it this way: Microsoft's Windows Vista crashed and burned. It drove any number of users (yours truly included) to break with their years-long adherence to the Windows platform and embrace the Mac. And yet despite that flub, and despite Apple's rosy presence in consumers' minds, Apple has failed to make major inroads into Microsoft's laptop and desktop hegemony. You can argue that Apple's pursuing a different strategy, and that its Macs' price points exclude the substantial majority of consumers want a cheap device for Word processing and Web cruising. In broad and basic strokes, though, the failure of an alternative operating system to gain any sort of traction, even in the midst of Microsoft's fiasco, speaks to consumers' ingrained tendency to pursue the familiar.Google's Chrome OS also has designs on a portion of the traditional OS space, embracing the new paradigm of the cloud-based model. But there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of buzz around its chances at becoming a dominant platform.HP's position as one of the world's largest hardware manufacturers guarantees there'll be some adoption. And the company's push into smartphones and tablets also running webOS means that, at least in the short term, it has a chance of becoming a viable, multi-platform "post PC" competitor to both Google and Apple.But Microsoft's had many years to dig in with its Windows franchise. And considering how Windows remains one of the company's prime revenue generators, as its cloud initiatives continue to draw no revenue and its smartphones struggle for adoption among consumers, Microsoft will spare no expense in ensuring there's not even the perception of erosion in its market-share. As the Mexican Army learned with the Alamo, there are very serious consequences in trying to fight someone with their back to a wall.Personally, I applaud HP's move. I have no idea how an operating system built for a smartphone will work on a PC, but I've always liked webOS, and I think competition is good for everyone in a particular market. But until HP announces it'll dump Windows entirely, I wouldn't toll the bell for Microsoft quite yet.Instead, Microsoft should be more concerned about how its "next version of Windows" will port onto tablets and other form-factors. Mobility is now in the driver's seat, when it comes to dictating future products and strategy. Both HP and Microsoft would do well to remember that.

Adobe Flash Player leaks for Motorola Xoom, we go hands-on (update: more video!)

March 18th may seem like an eternity if you expected your Motorola Xoom to come with Adobe Flash on day one. But you know what? If you put your trust in a mysterious file floating about the internet, there's no need to wait that long. MyDroidWorld obtained possession of a leaked build of Adobe Flash Player for the Xoom, which doesn't need root or even a preliminary update to install -- you just need to check the "Unknown sources" box under Settings > Applications, sideload the file or download it from the Xoom's browser and you're good to go. The best part? Based on our preliminary testing, Flash performs exceedingly well on the Xoom's dual-core Tegra 2 processor.

While this early build of Flash was pretty choppy during HD playback, low-res video content rendered at perfectly viewable speeds, and we were able to play games (like Nanaca Crash and Canabalt) so long as they didn't require anything more than single-button control schemes. By contrast, Hulu was a no-go (it's still blocked), and this build has some kinks to work out when it comes to multitasking -- while any single Flash site ran well and we could quickly tab between, the more Flash-heavy tabs we had open, the slower each one ran individually -- which is why the video above starts out so choppy. Adobe's UI also seemed to have some difficulty detecting when we wanted to make a Flash item full-screen. Typically, you double-tap an item to enlarge it, but sometimes that didn't work... but with some Flash content, we found we could long-press on a Flash window to bring up a UI bar that would let us focus on it individually. Before you judge the merits of Flash on tablet, remember that this is a leaked version of a beta release, and if it's this good out of the gate, we're pretty excited about how well it might perform after a few tweaks. Don't miss our video above, and find the file you need to install Flash yourself at our source link.

Update: We managed to get Flash to drop one of those context-sensitive buttons during a session of Canabalt and make the window full screen, which not only enlarged the window but also seriously sped up our little runner -- probably by redirecting the tablet's resources to our game. Update 2: We'll be shooting a second video later in the day to show how the Xoom handles Flash one site at a time.

Internet detectives are dredging up details around Apple's tablet computer. The Wall Street Journal noted the device aims to change the personal computing experience. Sony, Subaru, and Toyota close factories in wake of earthquake, other companies check in

Our thoughts this morning are with the folks in Japan and the other Pacific areas affected by the massive 8.9 earthquake that struck about 230 miles East of Tokyo. Reports of damage are flooding in from the country, and indeed many familiar manufacturers are checking in. Sony and Toyota have both stopped operations in their factories due to damage. Tragically, one Honda worker lost his life after a wall collapsed, while several Panasonic workers are said to have suffered minor injuries. It remains to be seen exactly what impacts this will have on consumers, but Sony's closed factories were responsible for the production of Blu-ray discs and batteries, while the numerous automotive shutdowns could result in short-term shortages. This bad news sent stocks downward, with German share prices for Sony dropping 2.5 percent and Honda 4.5 percent. We're still watching with concern to see what other impacts the resultant tsunamis could have, but for now we'll keep hoping for the best.

Update: Some further news from Smarthouse, which indicates that Sharp's new 10G LCD plant in Sakai City shut itself down automatically upon first signs of a quake. Tesla Model S pricing and delivery details confirmed

Tesla took the opportunity just before CES to reassure potential buyers that its Model S wouldn't follow the competition by creeping up in price ahead of release, and now we have what looks to be final confirmation: a full MSRP, complete with prices for all the different battery options. A base Model S, with an estimated 160 miles of range, will retail for $57,400 and will of course be eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit. The 230 mile range version will carry a $10,000 premium, and if you want a chance at making 300 miles on a charge it's another $10k on top of that.

So, $77,400 then if you want the top of the line Model S 300, which initially will be called the "Model S Signature Series" in the US, a limited edition run of 1,000 autos with big batts. Deliveries are expected to begin sometime around the summer of 2012, with the 230 and 160 versions coming later in the year. Tesla hopes to produce 5,000 of the cars in total in 2012, a whopping 20,000 in 2013. Oh, and should you live in a market that requires a right-hand drive model you have about a two year wait ahead of you. RIM's chief marketing officer resigns

We won't read too much into this, but it comes at an interesting time -- with only a month left before RIM is expected to debut the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, the company's chief marketing officer has resigned. The Wall Street Journal reports that RIM CMO Keith Pardy (formerly with Nokia) will leave due to "personal reasons" after a six-month transition period is up. The publication's anonymous sources add that Pardy actually made the decision a month ago, and that the move "reflects larger turmoil" within RIM -- as opposed to any sort of knee-jerk reaction over the iPad 2 launch, we suppose. To be frank, we're a little worried about the fate of the PlayBook if it's indeed close to launch -- when we tried a prototype at the Game Developer's Conference this past week in San Francisco, the hardware was still pretty solid, but the software was a bit sparse, and what was there felt like it needed more than a few coats of polish.

Toshiba shows off dual-core-powered Z2 HDTVs, Regza app for Android

Toshiba always likes to push the boundaries of TV technology -- Cell TV, Media Center extender TVs and its more recent glasses free 3D efforts come to mind immediately -- but there's always room for more conventional HDTVs and it showed off a few in Japan recently. The Z2 series of LED lit LCDs ship later this month and utilize a dual-core "CEVO (Cell Evolution) Engine" processor that has the horsepower to run its super resolution video upconverting algorithms. It also claims a mere 0.7 frames of input lag in game mode thanks to First In First Out memory that matches the performance of screens used in arcade cabinets. Even if you don't play Marvel vs. Capcom 3 on one of these, the company also announced it will release a version of its currently iOS-only Regza remote control / DLNA streaming app for Android and Windows PCs. Elfoid is the human-shaped phone from Japan that tickles when it rings (video)

The Telenoid R1 achieved a new level of creepiness on the Japanese robotic front -- quite an achievement given the country's long history of oddball automated creations. Elfoid takes the cake, though. Developed at Osaka University and with help from NTT DoCoMo, Elfoid looks just like the Telenoid and, indeed, does much the same thing: giving you a human(ish) silhouette to talk to. This one, though, is designed to be stuffed in your pocket. It's basically a cellphone shaped like a vaguely human torso and head. You put it in your pocket and it tickles you when it rings. You talk into its belly and it speaks to you in response, playing the voice of whoever's on the other line through its face. It also moves and gesticulates to make you think that you're actually holding not Elfoid but that person you're conversing with. Updated Windows Phone 7 update isn't updating some Samsung phones for March update

Man, talk about a flustercuck. After missing a cycle with its mobile phone strategy, the last thing Microsoft needed was a support fiasco related to its very first Windows Phone 7 software update. But after re-releasing a patched software update meant to solve the update issues seen by some Samsung owners, we're now seeing reports of a new issue on Twitter and in a variety of support forums and blog comments. At the moment, there's no clear fix to the dilemma characterized by a wonderfully descriptive "error code 800705B4." Unfortunately, what solves the problem for some (reboots, removing apps, freeing up space on the handset) doesn't work for others. Microsoft's official Windows Phone 7 Support Twitter account has responded to one frustrated customer saying, "We are aware of the error code are are looking into it right now," telling another to hold off on the update while MS investigates. Funny thing is, this minor WP7 update wasn't meant to do anything except prepare phones for the first feature update scheduled for early March. Not funny ha ha.

Apogee Electronics (no, not the company that brought you all those Duke Nukem releases back in the day) has announced the new Jam device, which enables a digital connection for electric and bass guitars into iOS 4.2.1 (and greater) devices or into any Core Audio compatible apps on Mac. You can record straight into GarageBand if you like and use the built-in control knob to adjust your levels. That connectivity won't come for free, naturally, with a $99 MSRP slapped on this one. It'll start rocking stores in March -- plenty enough time to find another new drummer.

Shortly after our first hands-on encounter with LG's Optimus Pad, we came across a press release from the company announcing the price for its 8.9-inch Android Honeycomb tablet in Germany: €999 ($1,380). We rubbed our eyes and pinched our cheeks, but we weren't dreaming -- that's LG's recommended retail price, alright. Now Amazon has listed its pre-order page for the same slinky slate, though it's sagely opted to chop €100 off and offer it up at €899. We still don't know who exactly will be jumping at this opportunity, even with 32GB of onboard storage, a dual-core CPU and a dual-camera array on the back allowing for 3D video recording, when equally or more compelling products are about to hit the market at lower price points. At least shipping's free.

Update: And just like that, Amazon's listing is gone. LibreOffice 3.3 Suite Advances While Staying True to OpenOffice Roots

In September 2010, a third of OpenOffice.org developers (about 20) objected to the open-source office suite falling under the custodianship of Oracle after the company completed its buyout of Sun Microsystems. They feared that Oracle wouldn't provide whole-hearted support to an open-source application project that didn't significantly contribute to its bottom line. They created the Document Foundation and forked the office suite code to create another open-source suite they dubbed LibreOffice. A little more than four months later, the developers unveiled on Jan. 25 a stable release of their first product, LibreOffice 3.3 (the numbering sequence conforms to the OpenOffice product chronology). The developers spent the time adding new features as well as extensively cleaning up portions of the the legacy code, said Italo Vignoli, one of the founding members of the Document Foundation. Previous OpenOffice fans will appreciate that LibreOffice 3.3 looks very similar to OpenOffice 3.3 and that many of the new features are also new in OpenOffice. But there are also a number of key differences that set the two open-source suites apart. The installer file is available on libreoffice.org, as well as a "help pack" executable, which contains the English language help files. Not installing the help pack means users end up in the documents section on the LibreOffice Website. If Java is not installed on the system, the application returns an error, but the installer doesn't perform that check. So check that Java is installed before running the installer. Rolls Royce unveils 102EX, the all-electric Phantom (video)

The word "experimental" isn't something you'd often apply to a Rolls Royce, a company with a history that dates back to the beginning of the 20th century and clientele that isn't much younger. However, it does have a history of producing so-called EX cars, experimental models, and the 102EX is the latest -- and the most daring. It's the world's first fully-electric ultra-luxury car, featuring a hulking 71kWh battery (almost three times the capacity of the Nissan Leaf) that can be charged in as quickly as eight hours. Inductive charging is also available, like the wireless Tesla Roadster we saw at CES, though Rolls isn't saying how long that takes. Range is said to be up to 200km, about 125 miles, and the 0 - 60 roll takes somewhere under eight seconds. That's not bad for a 6,000lb monster. No estimated cost has yet been applied, nor any real intent for production, but if this does start easing off production lines we hope it does so without the tacky glowing hood ornament. The Spirit of Ecstasy looks best when shined by polish, not LEDs.
